Welcome to the European Food Safety Authority

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is the keystone of European Union (EU) risk assessment regarding food and feed safety. In close collaboration with national authorities and in open consultation with its stakeholders, EFSA provides independent scientific advice and clear communication on existing and emerging risks.

Since MONDAY JULY 3, the EFSA website address and emails have changed to http://www.efsa.europa.eu/ and firstname.lastname@efsa.europa.eu. The old website address and emails will, however, remain active until May 2007. Please update your bookmarks and address books accordingly. For more information, click here

EFSA's First Community Summary Report on Trends and Sources of Zoonoses, Zoonotic Agents and Antimicrobial resistance in the European Union in 2004
[29 May 2006]
EFSA's First Community Summary Report on Trends and Sources of Zoonoses, Zoonotic Agents and Antimicrobial resistance in the European Union in 2004 was published in December 2005. The zoonoses, meaning infectious diseases transmissible from animals to humans, affected over 380,000 EU citizens in 2004. Often the human form of the disease is acquired through contaminated food. According to the report, the two most frequently reported zoonotic diseases in humans were Salmonella and Campylobacter infections. These bacteria were also commonly found in food and animals. The report includes information of 11 zoonoses, antimicrobial resistance in zoonotic agents as well as foodborne outbreaks.
